The Brown Sahib's redemption

It is so strange how some people change just by a little tweaking of the geographic coordinates. Ye, ye you would say that also means earnings pegged in another currency, a better life and all that trash and that the ageing sarcy me has no business commenting on that. But yes, they change and how.

So here is our man, fresh from there where the sun never sets (albeit keeps behind the stiff grey sky mostly). Everything back home seems "how this country manages"! He's here to get hitched. The fiancée's been waiting for over half a year. Any more & wait our dude would've been rendered as collateral damage. So he's come back on a seconded leave.

For a week now he has to work from the awful Indian office, crowded across the floor and where people are still sentimental about their jobs (bloody desi losers). But hello, he's their nri colleague and all that he has to do is throw some duty free alms at them and they would come wagging their mongrel selves. Ok that ain't gonna be as bad. He would be treated like a "client" from the onshore world and be drapped in red carpet (the paled ass could be licked too)

So here he comes, our brown sahib of this century, wagging his "phoren" i-card and with the swag of a true blue blood. But hold hold hold, sir kahan jaa rahe ho, access card toh dikhao. Well, enough to put him out of slumber. The guard at the entrance wouldn't listen to any of the nri shit and our dude finally  had to request a local access card. The next rude shock was at the work floor. He's not really a client and was not treated thus. No cellophaned cookies, no Evian bottles, nothing! A seat near the window is the best and the most! Interestingly, the few friends he thought he has had also moved on and he didn't really matter to them anymore. Not in a bad way really. He stuck with his €/£/$ dreams, they held just held on to where their passion lay.

The first couple of days passed with him all by himself. There were some ass lickers ofcourse who were awed at his tales of the salad bar and the antiseptic office interiors. But by the middle of the week he was thoroughly bored. The ones who came to listen to him didn't matter and the ones who (perhaps) mattered had no time.

The dude's only rescue was his one time mentor. She who'd groomed him through nights of difficult projects and through moments of damage control. Had stood by him and helped his career grow. She'd felt insulted, had bled and given up when he chose the nri status over anything else and worst still failed to see any reason (who does once the visa is stamped eh). He didn't care then and she doesn't care now. It was a chapter of the past. The damage done, amputated and gone.

Anyways the bit of emotional insanity in her (was that insanity or glow, anyways) made them speak again. He swallowed the Benson smoke and more of his pride and confessed a few things.

Well, what do you think happened then? The mentor mentee worked on projects happily ever after?? NO. This story of redemption doesn't end in such rosy notes. It ends with him expecting support and she making it clear that's its long over. In the real world stories often end on such dry notes. K-Jo sorry couldn't give you a script idea...better attend the nri dude's wedding perhaps!!

Return of the blogger - Amid the frustration and venting out all around

Am back...

The last post was some 2 years back. Can call it the constant battle with time or a writer's block - anything, does not matter much. The truth is that the blog has been around for nearly 5 years now (the first post was in Dec'09) and there have not been too many entries. At a recent school reunion some people pointed out that they have read this page and surprisingly liked it!!. Got me to thinking that I should write more often - as my father says, 'write anything that you feel writing about but do it regularly'. Therefore today's post. Oh yes, shall try to bring in some brevity and retain reader attention. Though that is the last of things which comes to me naturally.

And this is what I see around...

There is a recurring theme that I see around. Everyone seems to be frustrated and venting out. We are venting about work, about life, about sexual preferences, about moral policing, about money we earn, other people earn....the list is endless. While venting out has forever been one of man's basic instincts - from kitchen politics to the intellectual arguments; it seems that the present wave is much stronger, much powerful. Is this because we now have access to the unlimited world of social media where every breath that is taken can become a trending post? Or is it because we as a society are constantly regressing?

I would say more of the latter. While on one side the world seems to have moved light years ahead, we in this part of the continent are still battling issues that have stayed on since the past 70 years. It is quite ironic to see that religion and community led clashes are still ruling roost. Also a full laundry list of issues that surround our personal preferences and way of life have cropped up. Everyone seems to be fiercely protective of their own thoughts while being completely numb to the other person's choice. It seems that the threshold level of tolerance has drastically gone down. We are all there to protest and to vent but just our own issues. Solidarity is a thing of the select few only.

Going back to the initial hypothesis - when I say regression of the society I not only mean that we are resorting to the feudal conservative way of life. This regression is among the so called liberal, educated and thinking young people also. While we are so very conscious about our lifestyle, preferences, et all, we are so very intolerant towards the lifestyle that other people intend to lead. Is this not regressive thinking? If it is ok for someone to roll up a joint, its also ok for the other person to light up an incense stick and fold a hand in prayer. Is it too difficult to co-exist? Signing off with a 'think bout it'

Morning by the window

The monotonous hum of the alarm clock was at once irritating as well as assuring. Irritating, coz it pulled her out of the loose slumber that she somehow had tried to grab in the wee hours. Assuring, as she realised what her closed eyes tolerated in monochrome was just a nightmare. Yet, as she woke up it all started coming back...the pain, the betrayel, the feeling of gropping in vacuum, and most of all the heavy feeling inside her head. The lady strided towards the window - the only feature in the room that spoke of life (though not within but outside). As she drew aside the drapes, the morning outside the window was no better. It was a sad rainy morning - the rains just gotten over and instead of the lush green...it was a stiffling grey that enveloped everything around.

The morning by the window seeming no good, she decided to leave it at that and go about with the day. An hour later she was munching buttered toast at the dinning table...sipping her cup of Darjeeling ocassionally. The hour that had passed between then and now had included her considering to draw a curtain on all this shit and she had nearly downed a handful of tranquilisers. What held her back in those final moments - lets not get into that...The hour also had her crying inconsolably as the shower jet blurred her vision and the cold water from the taps mixed so freely with the warmth of her tears.

But by then, the crying had made her head lot more lighter and the resolve came back to her. If  this is what she had to call life...then she better make it look like life. She put herself together - a full workday lay ahead, then visit to the lawyer's and if need be to the police station. And yes, somewhere in the middle of all this, she decided to let that creep, her boss know that someone whose walked out of hell is not loose...rather someone who puts up with a creep might be a loser.

The day progressed in its usual pace. Only the difference being that the hours at work in the company of those few friends who understood passed way to quickly and those minutes at the dingy lawyer's office, trying to build a case seemed hours long. She had litereally grown wary of all this- repeating those moments of his insanity and her helplessness - time and again.

But still she counted today as a day of achievement. First, she could tell that jerk at the workplace the difference between a loose and a loser. Second, she had made friends at workplace. A bunch of women in her age group - some married, some engaged, while others happily single. It was interesting to get to her their takes on life. And after a chat with them by the coffee machine - she felt little less like an alien on this planet.

By the time she drove home, her conviction to live life the way it should be was stronger. The boundaries of survival that had once been rigidly chalked out by someone else were beginning to erode. This was her life - it ought to be her way. The past time was just to be treated as an ailment and she is now on her journey to recovery.

Next morning again the alarm sounded its usual time. Only now our lady woke up with a much fresher taste of life within her soul. As she pulled the curtains aside, a sparkling morning with yellow sunshine greeted her. The grey of the sky yesterday now replaced with an azure autumn. There might be still few dark clouds here and there...but overall it was a bright sunny day. A day to rejoice, A day to celebrate the festival called life

Dreamy

The clarinet had set its tunes since the crack of the dawn, and the air was rife with the fragrance of festivity. After all her parents had planned not months but years in advance for this big day. All around you could see busy bees neck deep into some or the other work assigned to them. There by the living room her uncle was giving the last minute restrictions to the florist…there by the lawn in the makeshift tent her father was administering the décor…somewhere within the confines of the bedroom her mom went tense chalking the itinerary of the next day’s rituals with her aunt…the whole clan was gearing up for the grand finale…her wedding!!!

And here our lady was…in her own room…surrounded by her wedding trousseau and her jewellery…those pieces of souvenir that personified the very truth of wedding to her. She caressed her fingers through the exquisite folds of the silk and through the breezy layers of the chiffon. She admired for the nth time each single piece of her jewellery…the solitaires, the strings of pearls, the jadau and the kundan. Oh! Life could never have been better...and she hummed to herself…

Diamonds cut bright and pearls shinning white

Rubies and emeralds fitting on my jewels tight

These are few of my favorite things…

Clothes in silk and chiffons in pink

Purses by Gucci, shoes looking so dishy

These are some of my favorite things

When am bored

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don't feel so bad

As she hummed along, Madame fell into a slumber , lost in her dreams about the new journey that she was about to start…her dream man…the knight in shining armour…he who looks so dashing and a wallet to match…

Suddenly she felt a shrill cry come from somewhere…the noise started growing louder. For a while she felt it was the shehnai…no this sound is different…and as if by reflex action her hand went onto switch off the alarm clock…SHIT!!! This was indeed a dream…the dull reality of everyday life dawned upon her as she woke up…An era had ended
